there are a lot of rumours circulating that the world is going to end on Wednesday. Scientists are running an experiment that will recreate the big bang – the way the universe was formed. Because nothing of this scale has ever been attempted before scientists cannot predict exactly what the outcome will be, one fear is that a black hole could be created that could potentially destroy the world. However, scientists say that this is EXTREMELY unlikely, I mean you’re more likely to see a flying pig or a UFO land or something similar! Also, if you think about it rationally if there was any real threat of something terrible happening this experiment would be banned, no one would put the earth in unnecessary risk
I’m scared incase this does happen.. but heyy why would they let them carry out an experiment if it could end the world. i dought it though there is a small piece of me that says it could happen. Why Are they doing the stupit experiment. just live your life and dont worry about how the world was created. pointless scientests.
My understanding from several articles today is that the Hadron Super Collider will just be “switched on” tomorriow, and that NO particle physics experiments will happen with it “until next year”. Maybe we will be told when the real-stuff happens, and maybe not.
In reading quotes from Steven Hawking, I was not too comforted, as other scientists say he “cannot” know that even any mini-black-holes would not “grow”, and no-one knows if the collider has enough power to create a mini-blackhole.
If the black-hole or a quasar were to be made, as best I have read, so far, no-one would know how to “counter” this, and either of these two energy forms could gradually (no time frame given) destroy the world.
Articles said, if it was a quasar, then a hole would be being tunneled through the earth and it would gradually go all the way through, either as a diameter or a smaller distance across the global shape. It might “open” a tunnel under / through a city or open in the ocean (then does all our ocean fall into space????).
I am horrified that there is SO little knowledge about what might happen.
When the USA was thinking about building their collider (in New Mexico, I think), none of this world-ending scenario was ever discussed in the general public circles. I wonder how much Europeans understood about this, when asked to build this.
Frankly, I usually support scientific inquiry, but I have to say that the answers they will or will not get from this Collider are NOT worth the potential jeopardy to all of us because they jeopardize our planet.
The whole thing is just unbelievable. I have no problem living near a regular size particle experiment. I did, for years, at Stanford (S.L.A.C. – Stanford Linear Accelerator Complex), and Berkeley’s set-up was across the Bay.
Placing this deep into the Alps was all I knew until yesterday, and I think that will not be enough to “cover the harm” if this is too powerful.
To me, there is NO difference between letting this “research” go forth and letting loose a huge, unethical nuclear explosion on the surface. What are all of them thinking!
So far, the courts in Europe have not stopped it. I hope that people there will keep as close tabs as possible on it, but from having a relative live close to Cheyenne Mountain in Colorado Springs, where America’s deep-ground command center is, there’s not much hope of the European public being in the know. It’s very scary, and for dubious benefit, considering the Risk.
