First, lest I be considered a bloodthirsty Leftist who wants defeat to be snatched from the jaws of Victory! – it is excellent news that Coalition troop casualties in Iraq are very low at the moment. It would appear that the increased troop numbers have helped to improve the security situation, although (i) that does not mean “Teh Surge!” was the optimal strategic approach (as always in the US approach to occupied Iraq, the focus has been on military engagement and securing America’s own interests above directing strategies at Iraq’s socioeconomic and political situation – not to mention humanitarian concerns).
But this is crap reporting. US troops’ tours are apparently being restored to 12 months, not cut. The Bush administration is now scoring points (and attempting to neutralise Iraq as a campaign albatross for McCain) for now reversing a decision it made that placed military personnel under greater strain, while failing to provide adequate support for their physical and mental injuries when they finally returned home.
