The president will compare Iraq to the U.S. deployment on the Korean peninsula in a speech to the nation Thursday night at 9:01 p.m. ET.
During the speech, Bush is also expected to endorse the recommendation of the top U.S. commander in Iraq, Gen. David Petraeus, that the U.S. military can begin pulling 30,000 combat troops from Iraq.
But the president will also talk about a long-term commitment to Iraq, the senior officials said, along the lines of the U.S. commitment to South Korea.
Hasn’t this President been telling us for years that this is “a different kind of war”? (Answer: Yes, he has – here’s a Daily Show clip to prove it.)
Now he’s proposing that the model for occupying a country that is facing a civil war as well as insurgency from anti-American terrorist elements is based on the model to maintain the demarcation between two countries? Where is he going to put the land mines to keep “the enemy” out? For that matter, exactly who is he going to define as “the enemy”?
The rest of the speech looks to be the usual crap – Petraeus rocks, the surge is working, we’ll be able to bring some troops home next year – never mind that we’ll actually have to. At least the Democrat candidates for President are starting to call him on some of the falsehoods – now they just need to follow through with action.
