It removes (or at least diminishes) practical limits on the number of attendees who can view something. The fact that it involves digital broadcasting of content means that recording and making it available are easily supported as well. Its advantage over simply streaming the content through a web site is that it provides a real-time forum to discuss and react to the event itself. Those are the main things off the top of my head. And thanks for the comment about the Dwarf, Wadard - even if it was misplaced.
