Well, by far the biggest advantage is being able to attend things that you wouldn't physically be willing or able to attend - there's no way I can be in Austin this week, even if I had the money and was willing to make the trip.

It removes (or at least diminishes) practical limits on the number of attendees who can view something. The fact that it involves digital broadcasting of content means that recording and making it available are easily supported as well. Its advantage over simply streaming the content through a web site is that it provides a real-time forum to discuss and react to the event itself. Those are the main things off the top of my head.

And thanks for the comment about the Dwarf, Wadard - even if it was misplaced.

[...] This blog discusses the speakers who will be available at the virtual events. And also, speaking of Second Life conferences, if this is your bag, do check out the Second Life Education Community Conference, available to both real and virtual attendees (as per usual, real lifers have to pay), taking place on September 5 - 7.
I have been asking around - and I am really, really fascinated/interested - what do you think some of the benefits are of Second Life conference-going?
