Well done, Team Australia.
At the moment I am just spending some time quietly contemplating the importance of this victory. The Howard era is behind us. We can look to the future and start working on the things that will make this country better than it has ever been. The Liberal and National Parties will be forced to confront their demons and understand why they were so soundly defeated, or they will not be capable of being a credible opposition party, let alone contending for government. The ALP and the Greens will both have a substantial role to play in the new parliament, and I hope they will each do their best to achieve real progress for Australia.
But the job is not done. This election has given us a much greater opportunity to change Australia for the better. The next task for all of us is to ensure that the opportunity is not squandered. We need to make sure this government acts in our interests, and does not hold back from change for fear of electoral reprisals.
Given that I have a busy week ahead of me, in addition to the fact that this victory calls for a moment of pause, things will probably be a bit quieter than usual over the coming days. But I still have a lot to say, and I believe we have a lot to do over the next three years.
